DTS: Document Transform Server for Lotus Domino

Overview

As users migrate from legacy systems like IBM's OfficeVision to Lotus Notes, one of the issues that arises is in the incompatibility of documents formats between the platforms.

The primary format in Notes is the Notes Rich Text Format, while on OfficeVision it is in flat text or Revisable Text (RFT) format. There is no natural transform between these formats.

Document Transform Server (DTS) overcomes this problem by delivering transparent, bi-directional conversion of word processing documents between Lotus Notes and IBM OfficeVision, enabling open availability of information in a mixed environment.

Benefits

  • Protects the investment in IBM Legacy information
  • Can be used as part of a migration and a co-existence strategy
  • Allows Notes users to view RFT-sourced documents in the native Notes format without any special additional workstation software
  • Allows IBM OfficeVision users to view Notes Rich Text documents in DCA-RFT format, maintaining the richness of the text but without any special additional software
Advantages

Document Transform Server provides high quality transformation of mail messages with a DCA-RFT attachment (in-bound to Notes), into Notes mail messages without attachments, and from Notes to RFT for mail going from the local Notes server up to the Host.

Documents and attachments sent from the Host will arrive at the Lotus Note addressee mailbox as true Lotus Notes documents.

Messages sent from Lotus Notes to the Host will arrive at the host addresse mailbox as DCA-RFT messages. When received by the Lotus Notes addressee, the "Body" field of incoming mail messages will be fully revisable Notes text which will have been converted into Notes CD-RTF format from the incoming RFT document.

When mail is passed onto the gateway for delivery to the host user, the "Body" field of mail messages will have an DCA-RFT file attached, which will contain the previous Body field content converted into the host DCA-RFT format.

Transformation server throughput and performance statistics can be queried and recorded. All transformation events are logged, including detailed log files created as each document is transformed.

The system is designed to be as transparent to users and as manageable for administrators as possible. As a server based solution, it is easy to rollout to a large installed base of Notes and host users.

System Configuration
The DTS is made up of three components

i) the DTS Mail grabbers; which use rules based on user names and domain names to identify and tag the mail items that should considered for transformation, allowing all other messages to be routed on by Notes without delay.

ii) The DTS Addin task; which queues messages, extracts and validates the
body text or attachments, runs the transformations, manages any problems
and records logs and statistics.

iii) The DTS transforms; which recognize and transform document files. DTS provides two Mail Grabbers - one for messages going to the HOST, one for messages coming from it. The rules contained in the DTS configuration
database determine which mail messages are processed by the transforms.

The Notes mail.box is constantly searched for mail identified for transformation. Each of these messages is processed in turn by the DTS Notes Add-in task.
